Downloading software
- How does it work?
- The downloads page lists all available software. Click on an item to view more details. From the details page, you may click on the filename to download the software.
- How do I respond to the message "do you want to save the file to disk or run it from the current location"?
-
You should always save it to disk, so that it can be run again later without having to re-download.
- Where do I save the software to?
- The location is up to you. The desktop is often a good choice, since the software is easy to find.
- It's downloaded. Now what?
- Normally, you double-click on the file that was downloaded to install the software. However, you should check the instructions for each particular download.
- I've already got an older version. Do I need to uninstall that version first?
- No.
- Do I have to update each computer separately?
- In most cases, yes. However, you don't need to do all of them at the same time. Different versions can generally co-exist on the network, unless stated.
- Do I have to do anything special after installing the new software?
- In some cases you will need to log on as SYSDBA once for the update to fully take effect. Note that this means once in total, not once per client. Also see the following question.
- Can anything go wrong during an upgrade?
- The chances are small, but yes it can. The most common problem is that the downloaded becomes corrupted due to a network error. This usually manifests itself as an error while installing, and can be easily corrected by re-downloading the software.
The other potential problem is an error during the server update. While very rare, these problems are more serious. We strongly encourage everyone to back up their server prior to installing new software.
